Ants-Horror Film Superstars
The emotional roller coaster of a good scary movie is a thrill ride without compare. The genre is as old as film itself. An actor who can terrify an entire audience or a wide-eyed screaming actress who makes your hair stand on end is definitely worth the price of admission. However, without a doubt, the most frightening horror film stars of all time are ants. The scariest part of all is they are not acting.
The first, most intimidating feature of ants is the fact that, according to scientists the biomass (weight) of ants exceeds that of humans. There are 6.9 billion humans on earth. For every human there are 1.5 million ants, for a total of 10,000 trillion ants. Ants account for 15% of the weight of all land animals. Forget the horror films. From a sheer numbers perspective, ants have already taken over the world.
Ants are extremely strong. They can lift 50 times their body weight and haul it away. If a man were that strong he could pick up a large pickup truck and walk down the street. However, remember there are trillions of ants. This means they could pick up and haul away every animal on earth-all at once.
Ants are also greedy SOBs. They will move mountains, literally, to get to their favorite food. If they want something bad enough they will find a way to get it. They especially love sweets. Your candy stash hidden in your bottom drawer has just been added to next week’s menu. Insight Pest Solutions can help you get rid of all those pests.
Ants are the world’s most proficient civil engineers. Ants can move 50 tons of earth a year within a one-mile radius. Their underground networks are millions of miles of intricate hallways and structures unrivaled by any other species. Imagine the New York subway covering the entire planet.
Ants are vicious warriors. The bite of a bullet ant is as painful as a gunshot-hence their name. Other ants engage in chemical warfare. They will bite you and then spit formic acid into the wound causing intense pain. Others will spray formic acid into the air making it hard for you to breathe. The Australian Bulldog ant can cause anaphylactic shock.
And let’s not forget ARMY ants. Like the US Marines, they are looking for a few good men-for dinner! They will eat anything that gets in the way of their forced march. Speaking of horror films, one the scariest movies ever was The Naked Jungle starring Charlton Heston. The army ants ate everything and everyone. Maybe it wasn’t a horror film . . . it might have been a documentary.
